Kyoto Aquarium tickets: check your date, entry cutoff and programme costs

Choose the correct admission category, check date versus timed entry, and separate aquarium admission from special activities. Plan bags and any railway-museum visit before paying.

Last checked:

1. Match each visitor to the right admission category

Kyoto Aquarium's ordinary prices are 2,600 yen for adults, 2,000 yen for high-school students, 1,400 yen for elementary and junior-high pupils, and 900 yen for preschool children aged three and over. The FAQ says an admission ticket is needed from age three. High-school visitors should bring their student identification.

Our comparison check: list everyone travelling, their applicable category and the total before looking at extras. Ask the aquarium about an uncertain overseas-school category or concession document. The published categories do not by themselves establish eligibility for a particular visitor.

Confirm that the product names Kyoto Aquarium. Keep this purchase separate from admission to another aquarium or museum; a similar place name or a nearby attraction does not establish ticket coverage.

2. Check whether your ticket fixes a date or a time

The aquarium's Web tickets normally specify a date; selected days during Golden Week, Obon and Silver Week specify both date and time. Sales open 30 days ahead. The operator asks visitors to present the emailed two-dimensional barcode at the gate and to allow at least one minute after purchase before entering. Webket registration is required.

Same-day machines are another channel, but they do not sell dates or times already sold out online. Ordinary tickets are not sold at the staffed counter; the purchase page separately directs users of specified discounts to that counter. Advance purchase does not remove possible entry waits.

Our checkout check: read the chosen date, any time window, visitor counts and presentation instructions together. Open the confirmation before travelling. The linked Webket page could not be inspected beyond a waiting-page redirect in our check, so current stock, transaction payment and detailed change or cancellation terms remain unverified.

3. Work backwards from last admission

Opening hours vary by day. The operator ends entry, ticket sales and annual-pass procedures one hour before closing. It normally operates year-round, but maintenance, events or weather can affect admission or opening hours. Kyoto City's tourism listing also flags variable hours and temporary closures.

Our planning check: open the aquarium calendar for your actual date, then record opening, last entry and closing separately. Do not substitute a general 10:00–18:00 listing for that date's schedule. The interactive calendar was not fully readable in this check; this guide does not certify a particular day's hours.

Choose an arrival target with room for the approach, ticket handling and the exhibits you want to see. Last admission is a cutoff, not a recommendation for how long your visit should last. Recheck notices before setting out, especially if another booking makes the day hard to rearrange.

4. Separate admission from a particular programme

An admission purchase and participation in a named activity need separate checks. The aquarium's notice of 5 November 2026 illustrates the difference: its winter event is announced for 21 November 2026–31 March 2027 with no additional event charge, but aquarium admission is still required.

That same notice announces a jellyfish observation session on 16 January and 6 February 2027, planned for 17:30–18:30. It costs 3,000 yen in addition to aquarium admission, is limited to 14 participants per session and is for high-school students and older visitors. Advance Webket sales are announced to start on 21 November 2026. At our 8 November check, that sale date was still in the future.

Our activity check: read the specific fee, eligibility, application method and meeting time. Decide whether you would still want the aquarium visit if that activity were unavailable. This dated example is not a complete programme list or a reservation; check for updates before buying.

5. Compare a single visit, annual pass and museum combination

The published annual-pass prices are 5,800 yen for adults, 4,400 yen for high-school students, 3,100 yen for elementary/junior-high pupils and 2,000 yen for children aged three and over. Compare these with the visits you realistically expect to make, not an assumed number of future outings.

The FAQ says a new digital pass lasts one year from the first visit, and becomes invalid if the purchaser does not visit within six months of purchase. It is personal and cannot be refunded or transferred. The ticket page says annual-pass entry does not require a specified date or time; that does not resolve an event's separate participation conditions.

The aquarium also links to a combined Kyoto Railway Museum ticket. We could not read the linked sales page's detailed terms. Before choosing it, compare inclusions, validity and both facilities' calendars with your actual plan. No combined price, saving or same-day itinerary is established here. Avoid buying two overlapping admission products.

6. Set the route and bag plan before committing

Kyoto City's tourism guide places the aquarium in Umekoji Park. The aquarium gives walking estimates of about 15 minutes from Kyoto Station's Central Exit or seven minutes from Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station. These are operator estimates, not a route we tested; use the actual entrance and allow for your party's pace.

The FAQ asks visitors not to tour with large luggage such as suitcases. Plan storage before relying on an aquarium visit between trains. A listed locker or storage service does not establish space for your bag.

Our two-stop check: if you also want the railway museum, compare its entry and activity times separately, then allow for moving between entrances and collecting any stored bag. Choose which visit matters most if the timing becomes tight. The aquarium FAQ asks returning visitors to show their ticket at the entrance; confirm the conditions for your own ticket before leaving. This guide does not verify a particular connection, storage vacancy or re-entry arrangement.

Adding Kyoto Railway Museum? Check its admission, steam ride and simulator arrangements separately.

Leaving your suitcase at Kyoto Station? Save the storage location and collection deadline before visiting.

Before paying: your Kyoto Aquarium checklist

Use this editorial checklist alongside the official pages:

- I selected Kyoto Aquarium and the right categories for everyone.

- I checked whether my product specifies a date only or a time as well.

- I can retrieve the ticket confirmation and required student documents.

- I checked the actual day's hours and kept last entry separate from closing.

- I checked any chosen programme's fee, eligibility and booking requirements.

- I compared pass or package coverage before adding another admission ticket.

- I read the selected product's change and cancellation conditions.

- I planned the entrance route, bag storage and collection before my onward train.

- I have an alternative if the preferred ticket or activity is unavailable.

Recheck before departure. This checklist helps organise a purchase decision; it does not confirm availability, a successful payment or your individual eligibility.
