Practical guide
Nijo Castle tickets: choose admission, Ninomaru and Honmaru separately
Match your ticket to the palace you want to visit. Check separate closure days, Honmaru reservations and the time needed after entering the castle before paying.
1. Choose the buildings before comparing prices
Treat castle entry, Ninomaru Palace and Honmaru Palace as separate choices. The official fee page lists general-category castle admission at 800 yen, admission with Ninomaru at 1,300 yen, and Honmaru viewing at an additional 1,000 yen. The Honmaru ticket does not include castle entry.
For junior-high/high-school visitors, admission with Ninomaru is 400 yen and Honmaru is another 300 yen; for elementary-school children, the respective amounts are 300 and 200 yen. Children below elementary-school age are listed as free. These are ordinary individual categories, not a complete concession guide.
Our comparison check: write down the places each traveller wants to enter, then match the selected products to that list. Check uncertain school categories or exemption documents with the operator. Do not buy a second admission ticket if a selected package already includes it, or assume a ticket labelled castle includes both palaces.
2. Check each palace calendar, not just whether the castle is open
The castle's listed annual closure is 29–31 December. The two palaces also suspend viewing on days when castle entry may still be possible.
Ninomaru's regular suspension dates are Tuesdays in January, July, August and December, plus 26–28 December and 1–3 January. The operator says that when such a Tuesday is a holiday, viewing is available that day and suspended the next day.
Honmaru's regular suspension dates are the third Monday of each month and the following day, plus 26–28 December and 1–3 January. The operator says the relevant monthly day is open if it is a holiday. Do not apply Ninomaru's substitute-day rule to Honmaru without checking the calendar.
Our date check: confirm castle entry and each desired palace independently. Read current notices as well as regular closure rules. A day shown as open for the grounds does not establish that every building or room can be viewed.
3. Keep entrance cutoffs separate from closing time
Ordinary castle entry is listed as 08:45–16:00, with the site closing at 17:00. Ninomaru's viewing reception runs 08:45–16:10; Honmaru's runs 09:30–16:00 and requires the appropriate reserved time. Closing time is not a latest arrival target.
A dated exception matters: the official notice for 6 December 2026 says castle entry ends at 12:00 and Ninomaru reception at 12:10, while castle closing stays at 17:00. At this source check, that notice said details including Honmaru reception would be announced later. Do not carry the ordinary Honmaru timetable over to that event date.
Our timing check: save the entry cutoff, palace time and any special notice together. This guide concerns ordinary daytime admission; check a night event or special programme's own ticket and access rules separately. Do not assume that a daytime booking covers an event advertised at the same site.
4. Secure the Honmaru slot and plan the walk inside
The operator describes Honmaru as an advance-reservation visit, with web tickets opening 30 days before the visit. People exempt from viewing fees and Kyoto citizen annual-pass holders also need a reservation. Some web tickets may still be available on the day, but only if there is space.
The operator also lists a small number of same-day Honmaru tickets at the information office inside the castle. They are not sold at the ticket office beside Higashi Ote-mon. Our planning advice: do not enter solely hoping that this limited allocation will fit your day; check the advance offer first.
The Honmaru instructions ask visitors to enter the castle at least 20 minutes before their reserved time. They estimate 15–20 minutes from Higashi Ote-mon to Honmaru. Treat that as the operator's estimate, not a personally tested walking allowance; add time for ticket handling and your own mobility needs.
Purchased Honmaru reservations cannot be changed, cancelled or refunded under the published instructions. Rooms and displayed paintings rotate for conservation, so check the viewing schedule if a particular interior is your reason for visiting.
5. Use the purchase channel for the ticket you need
Ninomaru viewing does not require a reservation. The operator offers castle-plus-Ninomaru tickets online and at the same-day ticket office beside Higashi Ote-mon. For a general-category visitor who bought admission alone, a Ninomaru add-on is sold inside at the information office for 500 yen.
Honmaru requires its separate ticket or reservation and castle admission. Check those two items in your confirmations. A booking for one palace does not reserve the other, and an admission purchase does not establish a Honmaru vacancy.
Our checkout check: verify the name of the building, visitor category, date or validity, reserved time, presentation method and total before paying. We opened the operator's linked admission and Honmaru sales pages, but detailed product content was not readable. No stock, accepted payment for your transaction or additional exception to the published conditions has been verified.
6. Put the castle entrance into your transport plan
Kyoto City's official tourism listing identifies Nijojo-mae subway station as the nearby access point. Keep that exact station name with the castle's official access instructions rather than using only the word Nijo in a journey search.
Our arrival check from Osaka: choose the Kyoto arrival station and then plan the remaining journey to the castle entrance. The reserved Honmaru time is inside the site, not the time to reach Kyoto Station or a bus stop. Leave room for the last leg and the internal walk before choosing a slot.
If you choose a city bus, check the actual stop, direction and boarding/payment procedure separately. This article does not certify a departure, connection or journey duration. Plan the return from where you finish sightseeing, including any bag collection. If accessibility, large bags or leaving and returning affect your plan, confirm the relevant conditions with the castle before purchasing; this guide has not tested those arrangements.

Before paying: your castle and palace checklist
Use this editorial checklist with the official pages:
- I chose castle entry, Ninomaru, Honmaru or a combination deliberately.
- I checked closure dates separately for the castle and both palaces.
- I checked special notices for the actual day, including any earlier entry cutoff.
- I selected the correct visitor categories and checked exemption documents if relevant.
- Any Honmaru reservation fits my arrival and the walk inside the castle.
- My tickets cover castle admission as well as the palace viewing I want.
- I read the applicable change/cancellation rules and checked the viewing schedule.
- I saved the exact entrance, station or bus stop and my complete return plan.
- I have an alternative if the desired palace or time is unavailable.
Recheck before departure. No third-party pass inclusion, priority entry, re-entry right or live availability is established here. A ticket listing and a usable itinerary are different checks.
