Practical guide
Taking a large suitcase on the Shinkansen: check the baggage seat before booking
An available train is not necessarily an available place for your large suitcase. Before paying, check your bag and the specific baggage-seat option for every train in your journey. This guide covers ordinary suitcase planning on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen; do not apply it automatically to other trains or specialist equipment.
1. Write down the size of each packed suitcase
Our preparation suggestion: measure the packed case's external height, width and depth, add them, and record its weight. Measure again after expanding a suitcase. Keep separate figures for each bag rather than adding all your bags together.
JR Central's general baggage rules permit two items, each within 250 cm in combined dimensions, 2 m in length and 30 kg in weight; small personal items such as purses are excluded from that count. A baggage-seat reservation does not remove these limits. Heavy or unstable items should not go on overhead racks.
2. Decide whether you need the oversized-baggage seat option
JR Central says ordinary baggage exceeding 160 cm in combined dimensions needs a seat with an oversized baggage area on the covered Shinkansen routes. Ordinary baggage exceeding 250 cm cannot be carried aboard. Its page describes reservation-free deck storage on some trains, but continues to require the oversized-baggage seat for bags over 160 cm. Do not treat an empty deck space as a substitute.
The boundary is more than 160 cm, as defined in JR Central's Japanese instructions and JR West's official guide. An ordinary suitcase measuring exactly 160 cm in combined dimensions does not require the oversized-baggage reservation because of its size alone; 160.5 cm does. Do not round a measurement down to avoid the rule. The general weight, length and item-count limits still apply. If you want to use the designated oversized-baggage space even for a smaller bag, you need the corresponding seat reservation.
The Japanese definitions clarify the boundary that is worded differently in the smartEX English introduction.
3. Check the baggage seats, not just train availability
The smartEX guide distinguishes whole-train availability from availability of seats with an oversized baggage area. Select the baggage-seat option when searching and use the seat map to check the relevant seats. An ordinary reserved-seat result alone is not confirmation of baggage space.
For a journey with a transfer, smartEX says to reserve the appropriate baggage seat for the entire trip. It does not offer that facility with non-reserved seating. Its guide also says a mixed booking of ordinary seats and oversized-baggage seats requires separate reservations.
Our final screen check: verify the date, direction, each train and the baggage-seat selection before completing payment. After booking, check the confirmation rather than relying on what you intended to select. We have not tested a live purchase or observed availability for your departure.
4. If the required seat is unavailable, change the plan before boarding
Our planning sequence is to check another departure first, then consider a smaller or repacked suitcase. If considering baggage delivery, confirm the provider's acceptance limits, destination acceptance and arrival date before depending on it. No delivery service or same-day arrival is promised here.
JR Central says the designated space is for passengers holding the corresponding seat reservation. It is shared, not a private luggage compartment. Ask station staff about an unresolved booking or bag-size issue before proceeding; paying for an ordinary seat does not establish permission to use that space.
The alternative-planning sequence is editorial advice.
Considering delivery instead? Check what to confirm with both hotels before sending your suitcase.
Before-you-pay checklist
- I have recorded each packed bag's dimensions and weight.
- I have checked the rules for my actual route and whether each bag exceeds 160 cm in combined dimensions.
- I have checked baggage-seat availability on every train, including connections.
After booking
- My booking confirmation identifies the intended seat option; otherwise I will resolve it before travel.
