Japan eSIM checklist: what to check before you buy

1. Confirm the exact phone model and carrier lock

Check the model you own, including its sales region, before paying. Airalo warns that eSIM availability can differ by region or carrier, and recommends confirming uncertain cases with the manufacturer or home carrier. Do not rely on the phone's marketing name alone.

On iPhone, open Settings, then General and About. Check Carrier Lock: an unlocked phone displays “No SIM Restrictions.” Apple says the phone must be unlocked to use another carrier abroad. For region-specific eSIM support, use Apple's current guidance rather than a blanket rule about all phones bought in one country.

2. Find out when the package starts and ends

For Airalo, the package's validity begins at activation. Its help page says many eSIMs activate on a supported destination network, while some activate during installation. Check the selected package's Activation Policy before deciding when to install it.

A fixed-data package can also end when its data allowance is exhausted. Our planning suggestion: note the activation trigger, validity and allowance together, then compare them with your arrival and departure dates. A package's number of days alone does not tell you whether it covers your trip.

3. Read the plan details beyond the headline price

Airalo's Japan store displays data-only packages, with fixed-data and unlimited choices. Do not assume that buying one provides a Japanese phone number or ordinary voice and SMS service. Check what the selected package actually includes.

Our buying checklist: confirm Japan is covered, inspect the listed networks, read any speed or fair-use conditions, and check whether top-ups are offered for that package. These are questions to resolve before payment, not claims that all plans include those features. If your trip continues outside Japan, compare the covered countries of a regional package with your itinerary.

4. Plan which line will handle mobile data

Apple lets you choose the data line in Settings under Cellular and Cellular Data. Keeping your home line active can still lead to home-carrier roaming charges. Check your home plan's Japan terms before deciding to keep both lines on.

Also compare the roaming service you already have: Apple notes that some home plans include destinations without an extra roaming fee. Our recommendation is to compare the actual terms before buying another plan.

5. Save the package instructions before departure

Airalo's Japan page says installation needs a stable internet connection and explains that the eSIM must be switched on and selected for data to connect in its coverage area. Follow the instructions attached to your own package.
